Prior to accepting delivery of an industrial fan, most large organisations require that the fan supplier
demonstrate the performance of the fan by providing the results of a Finite Element Analysis.
Leading producers of sugar and steel in Australia are no exception. One sugar producer experienced a
number of costly in-production fan failures over the years and was convinced of the need to assure future
fan design specifications.

Their fan supplier engaged our services to ensure that stresses and operational speeds would remain
below critical values for fatigue and vibration.
The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model identified the stress and frequency variables which
were required to verify the fan design.
One of Australia's leading producers of steel will no longer accept a fan supply unless it has been assured
by finite element analysis. Their experience of fan failure in the

production environment has amply demonstrated the cost effectiveness of this approach.
In line with this policy, Finite Elements (Australia) Pty Ltd assisted their fan supplier with the structural
design of two large customised fans for their steel plant. These fans continue to operate successfully today.
To date Finite Elements (Australia) Pty Ltd have performed pre-installation and in-production fan design reviews
for a number of clients, all with excellent results.
With the implementation of the latest ANSYS software, Finite Elements (Australia) Pty Ltd have developed a new
technique for solid modelling of fans. This technique identifies stress concentration issues, particularly at
weld locations, even more reliably than the modelling techniques available in the past.
